6 steps to getting over your barriers to success
How often are you faced with what seems like an impossible feat to accomplishing a task and achieving your goal? They are so frustrating and annoying; and what do you think when they occur, “this is the least thing I need right now”, or something similar. As though there was a good time to be faced with one of those much loved challenges.
After all that’s all they are; they are simple challenges that can be overcome with a simple strategy and a little careful thought. Your previous record of success will tell you how easy it is to take on a challenge and work with it. Consider the following 6 simple steps to working through your obstacle.
1. What is your goal?
Before you begin to scale the dizzy heights of your barriers make sure you have set a clear and specific goal; I suggest you use one of the well know and much used acronyms, such as GROW or SMART, for your goal setting process. If your not sure about the GROW model read this post, “why is goal setting important”
It is essential you know where you’re starting from and where you’re going to. If you don’t know where you are going to how will you know when you’ve arrived?
2. Identify the barrier
Give your barrier or obstacle a name. Without knowing what you are trying to ‘beat’ you’ve no chance of defeating it. You stand a greater chance of success if you know what you’re up against; you’ll also be able to explain to others what the problem is, if it’s got a name.
3. What have you tried before?
When you’ve faced similar problems or obstacles previously what did you do then? You’ll probably be able to identify a lengthy list of the things you’ve tried previously; some you will have had limited success with, others not so. It doesn’t matter at this stage whether you’ve had success or not with it; add it to your list for the next step. If you’ve kept a journal diary, this is were it comes in handy because you’ll be able to refer back to it and review what you’ve tried before.
4. What worked and what didn’t work so well?
After the previous step you’ll have a fairly lengthy list of previous attempts, unless of course it’s the first time you’ve attempted it. If that’s the case then I suggest to ask around to see who else has tried it before and obtain feedback from them; it doesn’t matter how trivial you think it is, it’s all useful. When you or others have faced similar problems and everything possible has been (well so it was said at the time), what was it that worked well and what didn’t work too well? Valuable information can be taken from previous similar situations; for instances it may be just a case of exploring one example a little further. Again with a quick reference to your journal diary, you’ll be able to review your successes, or otherwise.
5. How will you know you’re over the barrier?
How will you know when you overcome your barrier or obstacle? What will you be able to do that you couldn’t do before? What will you have that you didn’t have before? What does success mean to you?
When you’ve overcome this particular barrier; what will the success bring you, it doesn’t necessarily have to be your eventual goal. It’s the extra, you will have that you didn’t have prior to overcoming the barrier. It may only be a clearer picture to your next step; it may be access to a bank loan, whatever it is make sure to acknowledge it. See the next step.
6. Don’t forget to reward yourself
So you’ve successfully accomplished overcoming your barrier; now it’s time to recognise your achievement. You’ve done well; you’ve achieved something you have normally not been able to overcome. Make sure you reward yourself; you deserve it. It doesn’t have to be anything too spectacular but make it something you really enjoy and don’t have too often. Something a bit special!
Add these 6 great steps to your personal development and see the immediate benefits. The improvements in your personal growth will be there for you to experience.
