How to give yourself credit

all credit cards acceptedWe are all guilty of failing to give ourselves credit at sometime, even more so when we thoroughly deserved it. Or may be we only credited ourselves with a half hearted attitude; all the same we let ourselves down when we should really have been lifting ourselves up and raising our profile.

It’s so easy to do, especially if you’re a person who doesn’t really like the limelight and prefer to sit back and let others take all the glory. Then you begin to wonder why others are more successful and have all the luck while you continue to live your life of monotony and routine. If you are seriously looking to achieve a higher level of success it’s time to stick your head above the parapet and get yourself recognised; not just for who you are but what you can do. You have tremendous amount of skills to offer the big wide world; the time has come to share those skills and allow others to benefit from them. An earlier post discusses how you are everything to yourself, read here. Show them all what you can do!

How often when you sit down at the end of the day and say to yourself, “I think I’ve had an easy day today, I didn’t really get much done!” Wow, that’s a really powerful and damaging statement. When you think you’ve probable been engaged with numerous situations, solved endless problems and satisfied many people throughout a day of about 12 to 14 hours and you’re claiming you’ve not done anything.

Okay now you’re probably saying you’ve not achieved anything of great significance; so how much longer are you going to continue this assault of your character and your achievements. It’s absolutely impossible to do nothing! Sitting down reading the newspaper you’re doing something; not just reading, you’re also learning, developing your skills and discovering, just mention a few.

That aside, we are guilty of rushing through the day completing and accomplishing a vast array of different jobs; so much so we don’t have time to sit and reflect on our achievements. By the time we do sit down at the end of the day the value of many of our achievements has paled into insignificance or we can’t remember what we’ve actually done. This is another reason for giving yourself time-out, periodically during the day. Time to take a breathe, reduce the stress levels and the chance of burn-out occurring.

It’s time to give yourself credit for everything you do; even the smallest thing you do, like helping your neighbour. No matter how big or how small the achievement, give yourself credit. Consider the following process for giving yourself credit; the credit you deserve.

  1. Allow a few extra minutes to complete each task; use the extra time to reflect on your achievement and congratulate yourself. Pat yourself on the back! Be generous with your praise, don’t forget you’ve given it your ‘best shot’ and you’ve had to tap into the wealth of your personal knowledge bank. Do this regularly and you’ll very quickly begin to notice an immediate change in your energy levels; the accumulation of all the extra ‘bundles of energy’ will keep you going longer and improve your staying power.
  2. Also when you are completing your tasks make sure you do the job thoroughly; don’t skip anything off for the sake of speed. For instance time spent on planning and preparation is time well spent and in the long run will shorten the overall time.
  3. Don’t worry about other jobs that you’ve completed or your next job; you can’t do anything about those. It’s no good worrying about the past, live with what you are doing now and the future will become the present.
  4. When you come to the end of the day give yourself a period of time where you can enjoy some quality relaxation time to truly reflect on your day and befit from your achievements, giving yourself the credit you deserve. This will help you better prepare for the next day. Use visualisation techniques to help you truly take advantage of your successes and move them into tomorrow.

Use this strategy on a regular basis; start to give yourself credit and improve your self development. Don’t get too wrapped up with what you know and don’t know enjoy yourself and take everything you do as a new learning experience. Add this strategy into your Personal Development Training and record your progress in your journal diary.
