You are what you think

Serious morning thoughts: Wild Gibraltar Barbary Macaque ape“All that man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts.” James Allen

As you go about your daily routines a number of different thoughts will pass through your mind; some will affect you more than others. In particular the negative thoughts you have will have a debilitating effect on your performance, whereas your positive thoughts will have an empowering effect on your performance.

If that’s all it’s a case of then why don’t you just think positive all the time and be a high performance individual? Well, why don’t you? It’s not that easy is it. The negative thoughts take hold of your thinking and prevent you re-focusing them to a more positive frame of mind and the consequential high performance.

If it’s only a case of changing your thinking from negative to positive thinking what is it that’s stopping you? Well, you’re right it is only a case of changing your thought patterns from a negative inclination to a more positive one. The only thing stopping it happening is you; you are in control of your thinking so you decide what you think.

How you use your thinking is down to your attitude and how you allow thoughts, words and images to enter into your mind. Those thoughts, words and images then go on to aid in the success or otherwise of your activities and goals. Positive thoughts generate happiness, love and successful outcomes from every action whereas negative thoughts generate the opposite. So this means your mind will be expecting to find whatever it finds.

“What we think, we become.” Buddha

The bad news is that negative thoughts are contagious; however there is some good news, that is that positive thoughts are also contagious and probably more so.

When you’re feeling a down or your head is full of negative thoughts, you’ll receive the usual comment of “you need to think more positively” from the over helpful friend who really misunderstands the situation. This sort of comment is really unhelpful and not required; one because the comment itself is made without real meaning or thought behind it and secondly if you’re feeling down you’re more than likely unable to lift yourself and if you could you may not know how to think positively. When you’re feeling down how often do you stop to consider the power of thinking positive will help you. It’s probably the last thing on your mind; so when you’re feeling down that’s not the best time to start your new regime of positive thinking.

‘One of the most immediate ways to change your life is to change your thoughts. Listen to what you are thinking and saying.’ Dr John Demartini

A great starting point is to practice using positive words; write them down in your journal diary, compile a big long list and practice saying them. This process will take time, depending on how often or how deeply you are entrenched in a negative mindset. Be patient with yourself. Make it an integral part of your Personal Development Training.

As you use this process of checking your negative thinking and reprogramming yourself to think more positively you will begin to notice an increase in your confidence and self esteem. For you to see any real change you must begin to persuade yourself about the benefits of positive thinking and make a commitment to the changes; try the changes and feel the difference.

‘Our thoughts, our perceptions, our feelings, and our words can make us sick and miserable. But they can also make us strong, healthy and joyful.’ Dr John Demartini

Your new positive thoughts will become your power centre and help you to move forward; they will support your goal setting and achievement of those goals. Ignore any negative comments from others about the changes they see in you; this will be part of the changes you are making, the new more confident you.

“Our personal power is found in the force of our thoughts – it is our real strength.” Robin Sieger

If you’re not aware of a negative thought in your head there’s nothing you can do about it. By becoming more self aware you will begin to recognise those negative thoughts entering and passing through your mind; you will be in a better position to deal with them by adopting a positive attitude.

The concept of positive and negative thinking and how it affects you is not readily accepted by everyone, however the principles are becoming more popular and acceptable.

“The revelation of thought takes men out of servitude into freedom.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
